Baptism

Baptism

The first step on the path of discipleship of Jesus Christ.

What is baptism?

Baptism is the first ordinance of the gospel of Jesus Christ. It is a sacred covenant, or agreement, between you and God: you promise to follow Jesus Christ, and He promises to forgive your sins and guide you through the Holy Ghost.

Jesus Christ Himself was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River, setting the example for us to follow.

Crystal-clear water

Why is it important?

How is it performed?

Following the example of Jesus Christ, baptism is performed by complete immersion in water, by someone who holds the authority of God (the priesthood). This symbolizes the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and your own spiritual rebirth.

A new dawn

Who can be baptized?

Anyone who is at least 8 years old, who believes in Jesus Christ and who wishes to follow Him can be baptized. There is no requirement of perfection — baptism is precisely for those who want to start over.

After baptism

Baptism is not the end of the road, but the beginning. After baptism, you receive the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands. The Holy Ghost will guide you, comfort you and help you make good decisions throughout your life.
